William Lam's Maclearn now part of ESXi (causes dependency check on updates)?

$

Hi folks:

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this question or not, but I've been using William Lam's maclearn vib for a couple of years now because I have a VM that runs OpenVPN in bridge mode, and that needs promiscuous mode.  As with the nested ESXi situation that he wrote maclearn to address, this causes excessive CPU usage on that VM if there is lots of traffic on the virtual switch.  Because of that when I did updates I had to use "software profile update" instead of "software profile install" so that the maclearn vib didn't get removed.

I was going through the dry-run of updating to 6.5d and it failed with a dependency check:

[root@naplesesxi:~] esxcli software profile update --dry-run --depot=/vmfs/volumes/539b4dcd-0d43b62e-2a98-e840f2d1736d/Upgrades/ESXi650-201704001

.zip --profile=ESXi-6.5.0-20170404001-standard

[DependencyError]

File path of '/usr/lib/vmware/vmkmod/dvfilter-maclearn' is claimed by multiple non-overlay VIBs: {'VMware_bootbank_vmware-esx-dvfilter-maclearn_1.00-1.00', 'VMware_bootbank_esx-dvfilter-maclearn_6.5.0-0.0.4282379'}

File path of '/usr/libexec/jumpstart/plugins/dvfilter-maclearn.json' is claimed by multiple non-overlay VIBs: {'VMware_bootbank_vmware-esx-dvfilter-maclearn_1.00-1.00', 'VMware_bootbank_esx-dvfilter-maclearn_6.5.0-0.0.4282379'}

Please refer to the log file for more details.

I had read something about a new fling being available that added a better version of maclearn, but it required a Distributed Virtual Switch, and as I only have the essentials package, I didn't have the ability to create a Distributed Virtual Switch, so I was intending to just stay with what I had.  I had not read or heard that the original version of maclearn was going to actually become a standard part of ESXi, but if I am reading the error message correctly, I believe it's trying to tell me that it is.  If I do the command as "install" instead of update, it says that my version will be removed, along with some other ones that I'll need to research:

[root@naplesesxi:~] esxcli software profile install --dry-run --depot=/vmfs/volumes/539b4dcd-0d43b62e-2a98-e840f2d1736d/Upgrades/ESXi650-20170400

[Exception]

You attempted to install an image profile which would have resulted in the removal of VIBs ['VFrontDe_bootbank_sata-xahci_1.10-1', 'VMware_bootbank_vmware-esx-dvfilter-maclearn_1.00-1.00', 'VMware_bootbank_lsu-lsi-mptsas-plugin_1.0.0-1vmw.600.0.0.2494585', 'VMware_bootbank_esx-dvfilter-maclearn_6.5.0-0.0.4282379']. If this is not what you intended, you may use the esxcli software profile update command to preserve the VIBs above. If this is what you intended, please use the --ok-to-remove option to explicitly allow the removal.

Please refer to the log file for more details.

[root@naplesesxi:~]

The release notes didn't mention anything about maclearn, but it looks like it's here.  I guess my best bet would be to remove Lam's original vib first, assuming that this new vib is really the old maclearn version that works on systems without a Distributed Virtual Switch, and then apply the update in "update" mode so that I don't remove the others.

I guess what I'm looking for feedback on is whether or not that VMware_bootbank_esx-dvfilter-maclearn_6.5.0-0.0.4282379 really is a plug replacement for the original maclearn vib.

Comments welcome.

Unable to install ESXi 5.5 or 6 after ServeRAID M5110e firmware upgrade

We were in the process of upgrading our ESXi 5.1 to 5.5 U3 and before we were upgrading the firmware on our IBM System x3650 M4 servers using the IBM BOMC. Doing so, it upgraded the RAID controller firmware to version 23.31.0-0023.

After the upgrade, the host booted but the local datastore didn't mount and gave an error when trying to mount it. We were also unable to delete it. The RAID configuration showed no errors. It was a RAID1 composed of 2 HDD and 1 Hot Spare. Easy enough right.

2017-06-19_13-49-10.png

We contacted VMware and they suspected something was wrong with the storage on this server. Everything was working fine before we upgraded the firmwares.

VMware recommended we rebuilt the RAID configuration and try to do a clean install of ESXi 5.5 U3 using the Lenovo custom image.. It fails.

2017-06-20_8-58-08.png

I even tried to install 6.0 U2 using the Lenovo custom image.

The DSA, IMM2 and UEFI versions running are shown below.

This is the first time this has ever happened to us and we are at lost and praying for ideas.

Anyone's help would be welcomed.

Upgrade vCSA 5.5 to 6.5 Problems

$

I'm having some issues that I'm hoping the community can solve.  I have a vCSA 5.5 in my environment that I want to upgrade to 6.5.  I downloaded the 6.5e ISO and mounted it, ran the installer.  The problem is I am stuck at step 3.  I input the info for the source appliance (the current vCSA 5.5) with the appropriate info which seems to take.  However the info I input for the second section, the ESXi Host or vCenter Server info seems to be the issue.  I have used both the direct IP for the host as well as the IP for the vCSA 5.5.  Using port 5480 as I can't get further on any other port.

When inputting the info using host IP, I get the error "Failed to get an SSL thumbprint of the source server certificate for [host IP]."

When inputting the info using vCSA IP, I get the certificate warning window, which I press Yes to, but then the error is "Invalid credentials for ESXi host or vCenter Server."  I have switched the username to be any of these:  root / administrator@vsphere.local / vmadmin (this is our vCenter admin account) / vmadmin@vsphere.local - all come up with the same error.  I know that all of these work to log in to the host directly, and that the xxx@vsphere.local accounts work when logging into the vCSA through both the web ui and using the vSphere client.

So what am I doing incorrectly, and why won't it let me upgrade?  Should I just cut my losses and make a new vCSA and then remove my hosts from the old one and add them to the new one?  Is there something else I should try to do?

Team

I have a below version of ESXi running in DC.... vCenter is 5.5.0--3252642

Cluster NameHosts infoVersion of ESXiPlatform
DC15-VC01-Cluster014 HostsESXi 5.5.0-3248547Cisco UCS B200 - M4
SAP-Cluster29 HostsESXi 5.0.0-914586Cisco  N20-B6740-2, UCSB-B200-M3, B440-BASE-M2
SAP-Cluster26 HostsESXi 5.0.0-1311175UCSB-B200-M3

What would be ideal way of upgrade path for my VCenter and ESXi hosts.

Should I upgrade first ESXi and vCenter second.. and 5.0 to 5.5 and then 5.5 to 6.5 will it be possible?

With out any disturbance to current running config, how to execute without any issues?

Thanks

Hi,

I am trying a scripted upgrade from esxi 6.0 to esxi 6.5 on a remote disk (FC LUN) using iPXE server.

Seeing this issue “upgrade –firstdisk specified, but no suitable disk was found”.

However fresh“install” of esxi 6.5 works fine in the same environment with out any issues.  Please let me know if I am missing something in the upgrade part.

vSphere 6.5 Web Client sign in/SSO question from a complete novice

$

We are moving our View environment from 6 to 7 and putting the new Horizon 7 is going on a new vCenter 6.5 Server Appliance.  This has been setup already by someone else and everything is working a-okay.  Question I have is when I sign in I have to use username@ourdomain.com where as in our vCenter Server 6.0 environment I can sign in with just username

Is this by design or is there some sort of SSO/sign in configuration I can work on to change this?

Change IP for VM kernel mgmt of esxi host (trunk port)

Dear All,

I have Two esxi hosts in a cluster. Two NIC in each esxi host are configured as trunk so I have my vm kernel port and also VM network configured in same. One NIC in each host is set for vmotion. Now due to certain requirements I need to change the IP for vmkernel port of esxi. I need to understand changing will effect running VM or not. I am thinking like this:

- disable HA in cluster

- remove host from vcenter

-physically change esxi mgmt. IP, restart mgmt. IP

-add the esxi to new vcenter server, since we will be shutting down old vcenter and new vcenter is in new IP range the same as I want to change for esxi

are above given steps ok?

Compatibility Enhanced Linked Mode (PSC 6.5/ vCenter 6.0)

Hi all,

I'm in the process of planning an upgrade to vSphere 6.5 U1 on a customer site.

Today I have installed 2 external Platform Services Controller (Load balanced) and 3 vCenter in Enhanced Linked Mode.

For compatibilty reasons I will have to leave 1 vCenter on 6.0 U3 because the hardware of the ESXi hosts are not on the HCL for ESXi 6.5 (HPE Proliant DL 380G7/BL460 G7).

Question:

1. Will vCenter 6.0 U3 and vCenter 6.5 U1 work together in Enhanced Linked Mode (PSC 6.5)?

2. Is this supported by VMware?

Thanks for your feedback.

Migrating vCenter 6 to VCSA 6.5 include Web Plugins

Hi all,

Question: has anybody migrated a vCenter to VCSA 6.5 include installed Web Plugins on the old vCenter?

Currently we have HPE OneView and NetApp virtual Storage Console installed and running as Web plugin on our vCenter 6 (Windows).

Does the Migration Tool move the Plugin/Settings to the new VCSA as well ?

Thanks for any feedback !

To be sure everything will be ok I tryed to apply a single patch:

esxcli software vib update -d /vmfs/volumes/system/patches/ESXi650-201704001.zip

This worked without any issues.

I read through the internet and can't find a solution.

To get some advice would be great at this point! Thanks in advance.
