No compatible network adapter found - with ASIX ax88179

Hi !!!! ,
I'am college student, and I am trying to fresh-install ESXi 6.5 on an samsung np530u4b. The only network adapter is an ASIX ax88179 (TRENDNETAmazon.com: TRENDnet USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet LAN Wired Network Adapter for Windows, Mac, Chromebook, Linux, and Spec…  )

I used the ax88179-1.15.1-1_esxi65.vib and ESXi-Customizer-v2.7.2.exe to generate a new image custom esxi from a imagen: VMware-VMvisor-Installer-201701.x86_64.iso

During the pre-boot , I ran the following command: jumpstart.disable=vmkusb to disable the vmkusb driver. However, later I get the following message:try-solved-esxi.png

backing up and restoring your ESXi configuration

Hi This is my first post.

I have inherited an esxi 6.0 host (Del Poweredge R730) with 4 VMs on it. The VMs are servers essential to running the business.

I am planning to update this host to esxi 6.5 this weekend using vCenter update manager. The vcenter update manager documentation (https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.5/com.vmware.vsphere.update_manager.doc/GUID-90AA4FDB-B29B-4F7F-A400-38EFC4110024.html) tells me:

"Back up your host configuration before performing an upgrade. If the upgrade fails, you can reinstall the ESXi 5.5.x or ESXi 6.0.x software that you upgraded from, and restore your host configuration. For more information about backing up and restoring your ESXi configuration, see vSphere Upgrade."

I have searched for "vSphere Upgrade." The best I can find is: https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.5/com.vmware.vsphere.upgrade.doc/GUID-18B7B4BB-C24A-49CD-AE76-13285157B29F.html but I can't find any information on backing up the configuration.

But we do have full nightly veeam backups of theses VMs and I have successfully done a test restore on to a different host (running esxi 6.5). So I do have a tested workable option if the upgrade fails. But is there something I can do to "backup the esxi configuration" that would make it easier to revert if for some reason I have to?

And to reinstall the old esxi6.0 I asume that means to burn the Dell customized ISO to a DVD and boot the server from it and follow the prompts...? But if I am doing that, whole process, would it not make more sense to just install from the 6.5 DVD. The original install was factory provided by Dell.

I will be doing this on a Sunday. The business is closed and servers can be offline all day if required.

Best practice vSphere 6.0 HA with two NICs

Hey,

what is the recommended configuration when having two vmnics in total for vMotion and the management network together ?

We have a vSphere Essentials Plus with three hosts and 25 VMs.

One NIC for the management network and one NIC for vMotion with each one vswitch ?

Or maybe one vswitch with NIC teaming for both management and vMotion?

Or any other configuration?

Thanks for any input.

Rollback from 6.5 to 5.5

Hi All,

I have upgraded my ESXI and vCenter from 5.5 to 6.5, After upgrading to ESXI 6.5.0 build no. 5310538 I have applied a security patch which upgrade the ESXI to 6.5.0 build no 7388607.

So, is it possible I can roll back to ESXI 5.5 again? As I know I can rollback to previous version only that would be 6.5.0 build no. 5310538.

Thanks

vSphere 5.5 upgrade to 6.0 issues - spoiler alert, its a long read.

Hello associates,

We are having a few issues with our upgrade from Windows 2012 based 5.5 vCenter installation to 6.0, if anyone has any valuable input we would be grateful. Still waiting on VMware support to assist but the clock is ticking. We tried to go directly from 5.5 to the VCSA 6.5 but the prechecks failed with numerous errors so we decided to stage the upgrade.

Environment:

2 x Windows 2012 VCenter 5.5.0 build 1891313 installations using external MS SQL 2014 DB in across 2 sites in linked mode, used to be all 3 sites but the upgrade broke linked mode. 44 Hosts.

1 recently upgraded windows 2012 6.0 U2 installation using embedded PSC and local MS SQL 2008 R2 VCDB. Since the upgrade linked mode does not work and this VC cannot be managed by the web client. 3 Hosts.

Hosts are all running ESXi 5.5 u3.

vSphere Enterprise Plus license.

Issue 1:

Since upgrading the one site to 6.0 U2 the vSphere web client has an empty inventory, the thick client however displays the full inventory. I get the same result no matter which user I login with. Web client log displays the below error upon initialization. While not a train smash because the guests are still running I would obviously like to get this fixed. It is part of the same SSO domain as I can login with the same vSphere.local admin account, but its not a member of the linked mode setup anymore.

[2017-05-30T12:41:44.962+02:00] [ERROR] usage-data-collector-thread  70000006 100002 200001 com.vmware.cis.data.service.session.SessionPoolManagerImpl        Service initialization failure. CIS DS may not work properly. com.vmware.cis.data.service.exception.ServiceInitializationException: Error searching for service com.vmware.cis:vcenterserver : ComponentManagerFault null

Issue 2:

I cannot assign a license to hosts in the upgraded site. I upgraded the vCenter license and assigned this to VC, but since the other VC's are in linked mode and this one is no longer the manage vSphere licenses button is greyed out. I have assigned a license directly to the host, but this does not reflect in vCenter, it simply says unlicensed. This means that I cannot vMotion anything off the host in order to upgrade it to ESXi 6. I also deleted the local license file and started the trial period over again, but this too does not reflect in the VC. I disconnected the host from the inventory hoping that this might register it properly but upon trying to re-connect it I get an error saying the Unlicensed license for Host xxx does not include vSphere vMotion. Upgrade the license. So I cannot reboot the host and I cannot add it back to the vCenter and I cannot assign a license to it and I cannot upgrade it. Very frustrating! Any ideas?

Is it possible to add a Windows 2012 based vCenter 6.0 U2 installation making use of an embedded PSC and local MS SQL 2008 R2 VCDB to a 5.5 linked mode configuration?

Thanks!

Json files info in case using GUI installer for vCenter Upgrade

Hi,

I have one query regarding json files in vCenter upgrade. I know when we have to use CLI installer we preapre json files but when we use UI installer we put values on box which prompted during upgrade. So, in case of UI, does vCenter installer create some sort of json files or config files, if yes then which path?

In short, does json files created during UI vCenter upgrade?

Vsphere license grade questions - 5 to 6 (5.5-6.5)

I am preparing for an upgrade from vSphere 5.5 to 6.5.

As shown above we have a very basic setup.

Does upgrading the license online affect my currently installed license?

I am assuming no since it appears that I have to add it in my current environment.

If my previous assumption is correct, how will effect my current setup?

Will it prevent any of my current setup from working?

I don't think so but I want to make sure that I don't cause any problems with the current setup.

I am also assuming that upgrading to vSphere 6 does not require any hardware change.

I also welcome any other comments on the upgrade.

Thank you

Dear all,

This is my first contribution in this great community. I have one question to ask:

in my organization we use websense forcepoint. After installting the VMWare Worksation, I could not browse internet from Chrome. I still can use IE and Firefox. When I disabled and VMWare network cards, I was able to use chrome as normal.

Any help?

CPUs not on compatibly guide for ESX 6.5.

I've got 2 Dell Inc. Precision WorkStation 490 with Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU 5160 @ 3.00GHz CPUs for my home lab (note for my home lab and for testing only!!!), the CPUs are not compatible with 6.5, only with 6.0 and below.  I just wondered if there was  a way to install ESX 6.5 anyway even though it's not part of the supported compatibly list for my home lab?

I know it will not supported and some 'stuff' might not work.....but wondered if I can install it any way??  I've tried via VUM and booting from iso and it fails, anyway to 'trick' the installation of 6.5 just for testing in my home lab?

Newbie question for ESXI network config

$

Hi,

We have setup and ESXI 6.5 server in our development environment, and it works great to run different VMs.

Since the ESXI server is connected to our router (provides DHCP), our VMs acquire automatic IP addresses and connect directly to the web.

Now, we need to setup a new ESXI in a hosting environment, and our provider has given us 1 fixed IP.

After we installed remotely ESXI 6.5, it acquired automatically the fixed IP our hosting provided us, and we can connect remotely with no problems via ESXI web plugin.

We can create different VMs, but can't connect them to the web/outside world.

Ideally, we would like to setup this simple network scenario on ESXI but we don't know if its possible:

- The ESXI will provide DHCP for all running VMs in the range 192.168.1.2/254 (internal network for all VMs)

- The ESXI will provide gateway service, to support traffic flow from all VMs with outside world

- All VMs can connect automatically with other VMs running inside our server

Can this be implemented easily in ESXI 6.5?

If so, is there any simple tutorial that explains how to do it?

Thanks

Distributed vCenter VCSW v5.5U3 to VCSA 6.5U1e migration fails if SSO & Inventory Service roles are on the same source Windows server.

$

I am testing a distributed vCenter VCSW v5.5U3 to VCSA 6.5U1e migration scenario before attempting it in Production.

I have 5 Windows 2008 R2 servers in a distributed vCenter v5.5 configuration. Reasons behind this config need not be debated here - this is the situation I have to deal with.

MC-VCSW-V-201      Role - vSphere vCenter Server

MC-VCSO-V-201      Role - SSO & Inventory Service Server

MC-MSQL-V-201      Role - External SQL Database Server (SQL 2008 Standard R2 SP2) (VC & UM DB's)

MC-VCUM-V-201      Role - vSphere Update Manager Server

MC-VCWC-V-201      Role - vSphere Web Client Server

I understand the distributed migration sequence is SSO->PSC first and then VCSW->VCSA second.

I started the VCSA 6.5U1e Migration Assistant on MC-VCSO-V-201 and it fails with the error:

migration-assistant.log extract

2018-03-02 20:59:24.944Z| migration-assistant-7515524| I: GetJsonProperty: Json was: Warning: Following extensions are installed on this machine along with VMware Single Sign-On 5.5:

VMware vCenter Inventory Service 5.5.0.45995

This machine will be shutdown as part of the VMware Single Sign-On 5.5 migration to Platform Service Controller Appliance 6.5, and the above listed extensions will stop working after the shutdown.  move the above listed products to a different machine, and re-launch Migration Assistant to migrate your VMware Single Sign-On 5.5 to Platform Service Controller 6.5.

My question is "How do I move a vCenter Inventory Service component from a working vCenter without breaking something"?

The VMware Docs article Distributed vCenter Server 5.5 for Windows Services Relocation During Upgrade or Migration does not mention this being an issue!

Any advice is welcome.

Thanks.

VMware Tools installation vmware-config-tools.pl Error Unable to find kernel module dependency file

$

Hello,

I am new to the forums, for forgive me if I do not supply all information right from the start.

I need to install VMware Tools back onto 3 of my SUSE Linux 11 servers.  VMware tools had previously been installed, but some work done on the system recently by our consultant which resulted in the tools no longer being installed.

The install seems to have succeeded as uname -r reveals the correct package. However, the command vmware-config-tools.pl fails with "Warning: Couldn't open directory /lib/modules/3.0.101-107-default: No such file or directory. Fatal: Could not open /lib/modules/3.0.101-107-default/modules.dep.temp for writing: No such file or directory  Unable to find kernel module dependency file .Execution aborted"

I checked the /lib/modules and there are no folders or files there from the install even though the install said it was successful.

I am running the commands as root in a Gnome terminal; I used YAST2/ Software Management to install the C/C++ Compiler and Tools; from the vsphere web client, I chose Guest OS...Install VMware Tools... copied the VM*.tar.gz into /tmp and ran tar -zxvf VMwareTools-10.1.7-5541682.tar.gz   (This version of VMware Tools is what is on the other VMs)

Everything was run according to the instructions I have but the results did not turn out the same.

I am wondering what I've missed or what else I need to do to get the configuration to complete successfully?

Thanks for the help.

Building HomeLab - nested virtualization on Intel Core i7-7820X (LGA2066)

Hi !

I'm going to build homelab (nested virtualization) on Intel Core i7-7820X (LGA2066) and motherboard with X299 chipset.

I'm going to put on it esxi 6.5 and there on it build environment to tests.

Does anyone of you use such hardware for esxi 6.5 ?

Will features like FT work on such hardware (in nested virtualization) ?

Thanks in advance.

ESXi 5.5 upgrade to 6.0 or 6.5?

I'm upgrading my 3 ESXi hosts from 5.5 this summer and I was planning to go to 6.5 but I was on with support last week with a disk consolidation issue and the engineer told me I should not go to 6.5. He recommended 6.0 update 3. Anyone else agree with this?

I am already running the Vcenter 6.5 appliance and plan to us update manager.

Thanks in advance

William Lam's Maclearn now part of ESXi (causes dependency check on updates)?

$

Hi folks:

I'm not sure if this is the right place to put this question or not, but I've been using William Lam's maclearn vib for a couple of years now because I have a VM that runs OpenVPN in bridge mode, and that needs promiscuous mode.  As with the nested ESXi situation that he wrote maclearn to address, this causes excessive CPU usage on that VM if there is lots of traffic on the virtual switch.  Because of that when I did updates I had to use "software profile update" instead of "software profile install" so that the maclearn vib didn't get removed.

I was going through the dry-run of updating to 6.5d and it failed with a dependency check:

[root@naplesesxi:~] esxcli software profile update --dry-run --depot=/vmfs/volumes/539b4dcd-0d43b62e-2a98-e840f2d1736d/Upgrades/ESXi650-201704001

.zip --profile=ESXi-6.5.0-20170404001-standard

File path of '/usr/libexec/jumpstart/plugins/dvfilter-maclearn.json' is claimed by multiple non-overlay VIBs: {'VMware_bootbank_vmware-esx-dvfilter-maclearn_1.00-1.00', 'VMware_bootbank_esx-dvfilter-maclearn_6.5.0-0.0.4282379'}

Please refer to the log file for more details.

I had read something about a new fling being available that added a better version of maclearn, but it required a Distributed Virtual Switch, and as I only have the essentials package, I didn't have the ability to create a Distributed Virtual Switch, so I was intending to just stay with what I had.  I had not read or heard that the original version of maclearn was going to actually become a standard part of ESXi, but if I am reading the error message correctly, I believe it's trying to tell me that it is.  If I do the command as "install" instead of update, it says that my version will be removed, along with some other ones that I'll need to research:

[root@naplesesxi:~] esxcli software profile install --dry-run --depot=/vmfs/volumes/539b4dcd-0d43b62e-2a98-e840f2d1736d/Upgrades/ESXi650-20170400

[Exception]

You attempted to install an image profile which would have resulted in the removal of VIBs ['VFrontDe_bootbank_sata-xahci_1.10-1', 'VMware_bootbank_vmware-esx-dvfilter-maclearn_1.00-1.00', 'VMware_bootbank_lsu-lsi-mptsas-plugin_1.0.0-1vmw.600.0.0.2494585', 'VMware_bootbank_esx-dvfilter-maclearn_6.5.0-0.0.4282379']. If this is not what you intended, you may use the esxcli software profile update command to preserve the VIBs above. If this is what you intended, please use the --ok-to-remove option to explicitly allow the removal.

Please refer to the log file for more details.

[root@naplesesxi:~]

The release notes didn't mention anything about maclearn, but it looks like it's here.  I guess my best bet would be to remove Lam's original vib first, assuming that this new vib is really the old maclearn version that works on systems without a Distributed Virtual Switch, and then apply the update in "update" mode so that I don't remove the others.

I guess what I'm looking for feedback on is whether or not that VMware_bootbank_esx-dvfilter-maclearn_6.5.0-0.0.4282379 really is a plug replacement for the original maclearn vib.

Comments welcome.

Issues Upgrading from 6.0u3(appliance) to 6.5 - 7515524 .

$

I am running into an issue when upgrading from Appliance 6.0u3 to 6.5 - 75515524.  Step one of deploying works just fine and it is able to copy the data from the source vCenter server to the target vCenter Server.  However, I get stuck at 2% on "Starting VMware Authentication Framework".  My install sat for about 2 hrs before I cancelled it.  The estimate said it was only transferring 2GB of data.  Eventually I cancelled the install and tried logging into the serve believing it was stuck.  It would allow me to login, but would not display anything.  Immediately I received the attached screen shot.

I started over, deleting the 6.5 VM and bringing up the old 6.0 VM.  Ran through the upgrade process again, and am back to "Starting VMware Authentication Framework..".

Any ideas?

Consolidating multiple clusters, on various ESXi versions, with various storage, over various protocols!?

$

0

We have 4 vSphere clusters, each with their own storage.

1) 4 Host 6.0 cluster, with 11TB of all-flash Tintri storage over NFS via 10GB SFP+ Copper.

2) 3 Host 4.1 cluster, with 27TB of storage over 2 Equallogic crates via 1GB copper and 10GB SFP+ Copper respectively.

3) 4 Host 4.1 cluster, with 8TB of storage over 2 Infortrend crates via fiber channel.

4) 4 Host 4.1 cluster, with 14TB of storage over 2 HP P2000s via fiber channel.

The plan is to add a 5th Host to cluster 1, along with 50TB of storage, probably on 10GB SFP+ Copper via NFS and migrate the VMs from the other 3 clusters onto those hosts and storage.

As for migrating the VMs, I think this is our easiest option, but hoping to get some opinion/suggestions:

- Ensure all VM Port Groups from clusters 2,3 and 4 are trunked and replicated on cluster 1's hosts.

- Open firewall rules to allow Cluster 1's hosts to see and mount Cluster 2's storage.

          - power off all VMs on cluster 2. Remove them from Cluster 2's inventory.

          - add them to Cluster 1's inventory.

          - Storage vMotion them to new Datastores provisioned on the 50TB additional storage

- All a fiber channel card to the new Host 5 in cluster 1.

          - zone that card into the storage fabric of cluster 3 and present the disks, so it can see the Infortrend storage

          - power off all VMs on cluster 4, remove them from Cluster 2's inventory

          - add them to Cluster 1's inventory

          - Storage vMotion them to the new Datastores

Repeat for cluster 4.

We can afford the down time, but is this the easiest way?

Thanks in advance!

Ben
