Dear all,

I have updated some Dell Server successfully to 6.5. But as always, the last server, a Dell R630, has an CONFLICTING:VIBS ERROR (see below).

I have contact Dell, with whom I upgraded all Dell Firmware staff. And also, I downloaded the actuall Dell VMware 6.5 Image.

But, with both versions (original VMware 6.5 and the Dell Image) I got the same error.

Dell cannot help any more.

Network issues after upgrade to 6.5

I recently upgraded my environment to 6.5 from 5.5.  After a few hiccups related to non-standard ports, I was able to deploy the VCSA and subsequently upgrade my hosts.  Now I am seeing some unusual network behavior.  I was upgrading to distributed virtual switches over the standard switches.  When I would perform the changeover, I noticed the ping time from any of my hosted nodes increased significantly.  Average times went from .3ms to over 1.5ms.  Swapping back to the standard switch resulted in the lower ping times I expected.  Any hints to help me troubleshoot this issue?

VCenter Appliacne 5.5 to 6. Upgrade Failback

I'm upgrading our VCenter 5.5 appliance to a 6.0 with  embedded controller. Once you get to the end of the upgrade and hit finish it decomissions the old Vcenter appliance.

If you have issues or the upgrade fails at this point what kind of fallback is possible?

New install - vSphere 6.0 or 6.5?

$

I'm in the process of purchasing a new Cisco/Netapp Flexpod to replace our current vSphere 5.5 environment.  From a stability stand point, would it be better to go with vSphere 6.0 or 6.5 at this point for a new install?  I'm not currently using NSX, vSAN or anything "fancy".  Just a vanilla vSphere environment.  Thanks.

Migrate or Replace physical Vcenter.

I have inherited an esxi farm ( 3 hosts @ 6.0 Essentials )  and I have two problems.

1) the Vcenter server is physical and is running out of space.

2) We are missing  the SSO admin password.

( I have tried all of the suggestions for resetting it and noe of them have worked.)

So I am thinking a new install of the virtual appliance as we are not fussed about losing the performance data,

I cannot say I am sure about how to go about this and have not found any guides for this.

Are there any gotchas here I need to think about? Would there need to be downtime?

I should also say this hosts our test / development environment so is still pretty critical.

The switches are all Vsphere standard switches.

The backend is a dedicated and isolated Dell equalogic iscsi san.

Relations between patches and updates

Hello,

Understand that ESXi patches are cumulative, however it's still not clear to me whether upgrade and patch release together are also cumulative. That is, if I'm currently running ESXi 6.0 GA and I want to patch it to the latest patch release which is Patch 4, do I also get the bug and security fixes included in the Update releases in between.

To make it a bit more  clearer:

- I'm currently running ESXi 6.0 GA

- I plan on patching with the latest patch release which is Patch 4. However, there are 4 Update releases (Update, not Patch) before this Patch 4 release

- I understand that Patch Release only contains bug and security fixes, while Update Releases contains low-level stuff like driver updates and features enhancements etc. If I patch my hosts to Patch 4, do I get those driver updates and enhancements from Update Releases prior to Patch 4? Or do I only get bugs and security fixes

- If Patch Release doesn't include driver updates and general enhancements, does that mean that if I want those updates and enhancements I will have to deploy those updates even if those updates were older than this Patch 4? Will not result to some kind of rollback? How does that work?

Thanks in advance.

VMWare Evaluation question

Hi,

I have bought a cheap Dell poweredge T310 server to study with as a home lab.on which I wish to install VMWare Esxi5.5 bare metal.

I have registered for the evaluation version but of course the evaluation version is for the latest version - that being 6.5

Is there anywhere please from which I can download previous evaluation versions at all?

Any help greatly appreciated

VSphere VCenter Server Appliance install error

Hi,

I hope this post inst too ignorant as I'm new to this excellent VMware software

Firstly let me explain my home lab goals. I wish to set up a VSphere 6 hosting environment on my Dell PowerEdge server, inside which I intend to practice using VMware, and Microsoft SCCM for software deployments.

I've installed Esxi 6.5 hypervisor to the bare metal server. I named the server Esxi and added Esxi and its ip address to my local hosts file.

I can connect via the web on my laptop to the ESXI host and login with no problems.

The problem I have however comes when installing VCSA. When i come to entering the host name in setup it doesn't like 'Esxi' as the hostname, and complains its not a valid FQDN

I haven't created a domain yet (I was waiting to do that within my hosting environment) so I am unsure how to proceed.

Using the ip address of the server works in setup, but I would rather get DNS working if I could so I can have normal sounding server names.

I tried putting in esxi.lab.local as the host name (as lab.local will be my new domain name within ESXI) but it couldn't resolve it even after changing my hosts file to reflect the change

I wonder please if anyone has an idea as to where I go from here? Any advice will be gratefully received

Cheers

James

DELL R810 servers, VMware HCL, issues with installing vSpehere 6.5

$

Hi all,

I have R810 and R610 servers. The servers have been installed with vSphere 5.5.

I would like to have them upgraded to vSphere 6.5, but I see that the servers are no longer listed as compatible with vSphere 6.5.

How is this possible? My servers are just 6 years old, is it unreasonable for me to expect to be able to upgrade them to the latest (and greatest) version of vSphere?
Is there any reason why DELL or VMware would choose to not certify these servers any more?

Yes I have tried to boot and upgrade my servers with the Dell Customized ISO, and yes I have seen the warning that the processors will not be supported in FUTURE releases of vSphere but they are supported in 6.5!!!

And yes DELL did choose to equip my servers with the dead end QLE220 HBAs, but I have managed to work around that (see my other discussions).

I would like to hear from anybody that might have insight into the matter.

Hi all,

I have upgraded my DELL R810 servers to vSphere 6.5 (even though they are not listed as compatible in the HCL) with the Dell Customized ISO.

Now I have the issue that the server does not restart or shutdown poroperly. On reboot or shutdown it halts with an NMI fault and a PSOD.
Furthermore the following errors are logged in the system log of the IDRAC:

The offending devices are built into the motherboard itself, so I cannot reseat them or otherwise manipulate them in any sort of manner.

As far as I can tell there is no device connected to the PCI Root Port and to the PCI Express Switch. Is there a way for them to be disabled from BIOS (or in any other way for that matter).

The server works properly as far as I can tell (apart from the hangs on reboot and shutdown), but I am concerned if there is a risk to continue running on these servers?

Upgrading from ESXi 5.5.0 to 6.0

Wanted to post here to see if upgrading to 6.0 is a possibility. We're running ESXi 5.5.0 2403361 on a Dell Poweredge 2900. We originally started with 5.1. After logging in to check our product license keys I see that we only have one license for "vCenter Server 5 Essentials" and one for "vSphere 5 Essentials Plus" and I know we need to upgrade the key for 6.0 but not sure how to do that.

If we can upgrade our key to 6.0, Can I used the ISO directly from VMware on my Dell PE2900? I think we did that when we originally set it up but I forget. Want to be sure it has the drivers included.

Changing MTU in vmkernel needs reboot?

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my enviroment. Esxi 6.0 update 2.

8 hosts HP DL980, distributed switches, with one LACP each. One for virtual machines e one for communication with the storage.

Everything is working just fine, until we decided to configure jumbo frame.

We changed storage´s side MTU to 9000, VMware´s to 9000, and switch also to 9000. Yes, i know that switch´s side needs to be higher. We have already scheduled to change it.

My problem is, with my vmware´s MTU 9000, when I browse files in a datastore NFS, after a while, it gets inactive. And it won´t show its files. That´s because my MTU is 9000.

What I had to do is change VMware´s vmkernel MTU to 8000 something, around 8960, and bring all the vmnics from the LACP that communicates with the storage down, until the datastores lose connection, After this, I bring them up again, and the datastores become accessible. And it won´t lose connectivity anymore. I can browse files, and nothing happens.

If I don´t reboot the vmnics until I loose connectivity with the datastores, I think it won´t renew its configuration. And the connection stays 9000, even changing the MTU in the vmkernel.

Do you have any ideia if this is documented anywhere?

Sorry for my bad english.

Best Regards,

Bruno

I am having this problem where i do a fresh deploy of vSphere Data Protection 6.1.3 and also 6.1.2 but when it's on i cannot go into https://ip-appliace:8543/vdp-configure.

Also when i go into the appliance i execute dpnctl status all and all the services appear as down. When i try to start gsan manually this is the error i see.

dpnctl: INFO: Checking that gsan was shut down cleanly...

dpnctl: ERROR: 1 error seen in output of "export SYSPROBEUSER=admin && /usr/local/avamar/bin/mapall --noerror '/bin/cat /tmp/dpnctl-gsan-isclean-output-23250 /tmp/dpnctl-gsan-isclean-status-23250' 2>&1"

dpnctl: ERROR: rollback and restart failed: no checkpoint found to which to roll back

dpnctl: ERROR: gsan is not up, so not restarting MCS

I did a fresh deploy 6 times and always the same  problem. I can ping the appliance, all the ports are open.

Please could you please help me with this? Is really urgent!

Thanks in advance.

"Feature" Request - long term support (LTS) version

$

Hi vmware and everyone else

I just noticed that since esxi 6 vmware cut (general) support to 3 years instead of 5 years - so about 40%! In IT you don’t want to spent time on upgrading systems with new version you don’t really need, at least me. Sometimes you are ok with the current feature set and just want to make sure you are getting security and bug fixes and spent LIMITED TIME with much more important stuff!

That’s why I would love to see a long term support version for vsphere with a minimum of 5 year general support, kind of Ubuntu LTS release cycle, where they are releasing a new LTS version every 2 years with 5y support and in between still new major versions with lower support time.

What about the others here? Same opinion?

greetings

Chris

Intel NVME driver installation

Hello,

I am having trouble installing the Intel NVME driver on my 5.5.0 build. The error message I keep getting is "The transaction is not supported: VIB Intel..... cannot be live installed." I have shutdown and restarted the server, ensured it is in maintenance mode and dropped the driver support to community supported. I have also tried both the driver from the Intel site and the one on the VMWare site.

So for each driver I have tried doing the esxcli software vib install -v {VIBFILE} and the esxcli software vib install -d {OFFLINE_BUNDLE}. I get the same error no matter what driver or no matter whether I try online of offline install.

I have restarted a number of times and even tried adding --maintenance-mode to ensure the server is registering correctly.

Does any have any tips as I am not an expert and it has got me stuffed at this point.

Increasing number of CPUs on Win 2012 R2 VM?

I have upgraded to new hardware (HP 360p Gen8 from G7) which gave me more CPU cores. There are now 2 CPUs with 10 cores each.

However my Windows Server 2012 R2 moving from old hardware was configured to 4 cores. New is ESXi 6.0U2.

Now I want to see if I can adjust the amount of CPUs for this VM to the maximum. This is a Media Streaming server.

How can I increase the number of CPUs on Windows 2012 R2 VM without compromising stability?

Adding a Second Cluster

We are going to be doubling our View environment and I am going to put View in it's own cluster so i have a few questions.  What my 30,000 foot plan is is to Create  a new cluster, add another vCenter server (for that cluster).  i currently have 5 host in one cluster taking care of approximately 190 VM's (desktop and server).  I am adding a 6th host then going to put two of the original hosts in the new cluster along with the new host to make 3 hosts per cluster.  After adding vCenter i was going to put the 2 hosts (to be moved) into maintenance mode, forcing all View VM's to the other three hosts.  Then removing the two host from the original cluster and adding them to the new cluster.  That should give me two clusters with 3 hosts with the original cluster now handling only the view environment.  Once clusters are in place, move all servers to the new cluster.

The questions I have for everyone are...Is there anything i need to be concerned with in this scenario and is this a good option?  Anything special need to be done when moving all the SERVERS to the new cluster with the new vCenter?  Might there be an easier way of getting this done?  Any comments or suggestions are welcome.  thanks!

Upgrade from free ESXi 6.5 to vSphere Essentials Kit (academic) - Web Clients Question and more

$

Hi,

I assume I can upgrade the currenty installed free ESXi 6.5 Hypervisor to vSphere Essentials Kit 6.5 by just changing the license key. At least I've read this on those forums lately.

1) Does this apply for the academic license, too?

2) The free hypervisor comes with the new pre-installed Web Client (I already updated to v1.16 available from the labs here ESXi Embedded Host Client)

3) There is although the HTML5 Web Client which does not work with the free hypervisor for known reasons, downloadable here vSphere HTML5 Web Client

Will this HTML5 client work with vSphere Essentials, too? I've read the appropriate manual and it seems the procedure to install this HTML5 client is very complicated, at least from my view and limited knowledge.

I guess this HTML5 client is not already hidden somewhere inside the ESXi installation and upgrading will not automatically unlock it, right?

4) OTH, I've seen many videos or screenshots, showing another Web front-end, maybe it was for the old v6.0 vSphere versions. So is there a difference between the Labs HTML5 client and a pre-installed one?

Just asking many questions since I'm starting to get familiar with those VMWare products and licenses things. Very confusing are those available clients here and there.

Thanks,

Michael
