vShpere NAS and small business environment

$

Hi,

I have studied computers and I want to help in my family's business to set up the network right so that I can have security and high availability.

In this frame, I am considering of building 2 ESXi Servers with VCenter Server in a small business environment with 12 PCs.

My plan is to have a full back up of our Windows Server in one ESXi so in case of a disaster of the one computer I can "rebuilt" it in the other ESXi host (I am going to have also other VMs for other purposes.)

From your experience I would like to know if a NAS would help this set up and how!

Would a VM running from NAS hard disk create a bottleneck. What do you think are best prices for small business environments?

I truly appreciate if you could share your knowledge and experiance with me,

Frank

vCenter Appliance deployment

I have 2 ESX 6 servers in an isolated environment (no internet access or local DNS). I am trying to deploy the vCenter appliance 6.5 to manage them. All devices are on the same subnet. Deployment appears to make through Stage 1 but Stage 2 errors with just an "Internal Error". I've tried adding my vcenter FQDN to both the local vcenter appliance and the machine I am running the set up from as I thought it might be DNS related, but no success. Any ideas?

Thanks

Question on Workstation Network Editor vs ESXi & vCenter

$

Hi,

I am interested in the virtual world and I am following some video lessons for vSphere 6.5. In the video lessons they are adding networks adapters to the ESXi from Virtual Network Editor (Edit -> Virtual Network Editor...) from inside Workstation.

In my case, I have installed the ESXi in a real PC and vCenter Server Appliance. I do not have Workstation of course. So how can I a new network adapter (nat) in my ESXi host?

Is it through ESXi portal Networking ->VMkernel NICs-> Add VMKernel NIC -> Port group?

Sorry if this is a silly question... But I am still learning!

VCSA Upgrade From 6.0U2 to 6.5 - DNS Error on Stage 2

Hi,
I have tried to upgrade my home server VCSA 6.0U2 to 6.5. I am getting the attached DNS error in the stage 2 process. I dont have any DNS server. I am not sure how to resolve this issue.

Error

Host name X.X.X.X is not DNS resolvable, but matches the machine certificates. If you do not configure a valid DNS resolvable hostname mapping, then you might not be able to connect to the vCSA afterwards
Resolution

Either update appliance /etc/hosts or /etc/resolv.conf file to properly access DNS servers or update appliance DNS servers with the proper host name mapping. To check if DNS server has record about local host name, execute `dig X.X.X.X +short` locally on the appliance, or `nslookup X.X.X.X` on a windows machine.

Could you please help me to resolve this issue?

Thank you

Sun X4100 M2 vSphere install hangs

I'm trying to perform a fresh install of 6.5 and it seems to hang after the initial screen. The server originally has 5.0 installed.

The same problem occurs with 6.0 too. Did not see the server listed in HCL. Could that be the reason?

Upgrade considerations from 5.5U1 to either 5.5U3 or 6.5a

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for some guidance.

We have a small datacenter in a region running VCenter on a Windows Server 2012 version is 5.5U1, there are 2 ESXi hosts running 5.5 U1, they both replicate to a Vsphere replication appliance running on a third ESXi hosts on 5.5 U1 (VA is 5.8.0.1 Build 2170514)

There is no HA setup, we are running Essentials so we are planning on some downtime.

We need to upgrade the ESXi hosts at least to 5.5 U3 because of a problem we encounter where a virtual server is stuck at Loading https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2092807

What would consider the best approach:

Upgrade vcenter to 5.5U3 then all the ESXi hosts (eventually upgrade later VA)

Upgrade vcenter to 6.5 a then all the ESXi hosts (eventually upgrade later VA)

Or another scenario

Would VA work at it scurrent version if i upgrade vCenter and ESXi hosts?

ESXi 6.0 U2 installation on Cisco UCS B200-M4 blade server (double free or corruption)

Greetings,

I am facing an issue with 4k disk drives on Cisco UCS B200-M4 servers and VMware ESXi 6.0 U2, during the installation at the stage when I have to select a disk to install ESXi on it , VMware is able to detect the virtual drive that comes from the Mega RAID 12G (UCSB-MRAID12G)  however once I selected the volume I got an error "double free or corruption". right now I am unable to install ESXi on this server.

each server has two 1.8 TB 12G SAS 10K RPM SFF HDD (4K) , 4k means the logical sector size is 4K and physical sector size is 4K.

according to this KB from VMware (https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2091600)

- vSphere 6.0 does not support 4K and 512e

-vSphere 6.5 support 512e (not 4K)

Which version of vSphere and vSAN support 512e drives?

vSphere 6.5 and vSAN 6.5 support 512e drives as direct attached drives. vSphere & vSAN will expose 512n to Guest OS.

VMFS 6.0 is required for 512e drive support starting with vSphere 6.5.

Prior to version 6.5, direct attached drives which expose 512e to vSphere and vSAN are not supported due to potential performance issues when using these drives

in the spec sheet of B200 server there is a side note clarifying the following:

4K format drives are supported and qualified as bootable with Cisco UCS Manager Release 3.1(2b)and later versions. However, 4K sector format drives do not support VMware and require UEFI boot.

to sum it up, can we do anything with the existing configuration as workaround or we have to consider one of both options:

  • replace 4kn drives with 512n drives and install 6.0 U2
  • replace 4kn drives with 512e drives and install 6.5

Thanks in advance

VMWare Guru's.. Need help moving from Hyper-V to ESXi

All..

I've searching for quite some time but am unable to find the "best" solution to move from Hyper-V to ESXi and was hoping someone could provide the steps. Current Setup:

1) SINGLE Hyper-V Server (2016), 12 core, 64Gb Ram, 250GB SSD boot drive, 1TB for Virtual Boxes (Most are running Windows Server 2016, a few LINUX). Various Servers are a Domain Controller, SQL Server, Syslog, and various

I can handle downtime, but would prefer not to if possible. Is there a way to move from Hyper-V to ESXi without having to rebuild of my current Servers? Here's what my research has led me to

1) Install VMWare Workstation on my Desktop

2) Use VMware Converter and do inplace migration from Hyper-V Guests to VmWare Workstation

3) Install ESXi (HyperVisor) on existing Hyper-V Box

4) Migrate from VmWare Workstation to newly built ESXi Server

Does this sound correct? I'm sure I'm missing something in here

can you migrate vitual machines from 5.1 host to 6.5 host

$

Our current VMware environment includes 4, ESXi 5.1 host servers running 58 virtual machines.

For whatever reason, the previous VMware Admin, did not upgrade VMware and we are now getting ready to do a complete hardware refresh with new physical host and SAN environment.

Since there is no upgrade path from 5.1 to 6.5a, we are going to do a complete new installation of VMware and vCenter.

My question is, will it be possible to migrate our virtual machines from the 5.1 to the new environment or do we have to upgrade the current environment to 5.5 or 6.0 first?

Upgrade to large disks VMWare ESXI 6.0

$

Hi! I'm using VMWare ESXI 6.0 on a HP Proliant Server. It have 2 disks in RAID 1, 600GB for the virtual machines.
I want to migrate all to new disks that are already there. 2 disks in RAID 1, 1.2TB.

What is the best way to do that? I want to continue with all data and configuration untouched, like all the configuration (IP and so on) remains the same on my network.

Sorry for my bad english and thanks in advance

GPU Passthrough / Windows Terminal Services / Horizon

I have a 5.5 VM running Server 2008 R2 with Terminal Services

I can pass through an AMD GPU but the VM does offload video rendering to the GPU

Do I need to use a product like Horizon first to make this work ? (or a GRID GPU)

Also, we are prepared to upgrade to Windows Server 2016 and ESXi 6.5 if necessary

5.0 ---> 6.0 : Upgrade or Migrate?

$

Hello,

Having a hard time deciding which path to take. Current environment:

Single HP C7000 blade chassis with 4 blades connected to an HP P2000 G3 SAN. ESXi 5 hosts and vcenter Server 5.

Bought 3 new Gen9 blades and a new HP MSA 2042 SAN. Goal is to upgrade to 6.0U2 and eventually 6.5

The VMWare environment is simple - just HA features. All existing hosts are mapped to all datastores.

Seems to me creating a brand new Vcenter 6 server on the new blades/new storage and just migrating the VMs over would be the easiest route. Would you consider an in place upgrade in this case at all? Thanks for any guidance!

Uninstall ESXi 6.5

Hi,

Haha this is the other way around question of what they normally ask

I have installed esxi for testing purposes. Now I want to install windows on that machine again (clean install)

OK I have put the Microsft CD, the installation starts, but it does not let me since the disks are in an unknown format.

After some research. I have tried GPARTED. I managed somehow to reformat my SSD . But the HDD remains unknown.

In installation I have selected the SSD - in between many partitions, I selected the biggest partition size and the windows were installed.

Unfortunately, windows 10 still cannot detect my Seagate at all!

So, my question is after an ESXi installation with many partitions. What is the proper way to erase and reformat both SSD and HDD to 1 partition in order to be ready to install windows?

Thank you in advance,

Frank

Update manager finds conflicting VIBs

$

On a vCenter 6.5a I am trying to upgrade three hosts. They are getting listed as incompatible as they are having two conflicting VIBs:

The upgrade contains the following set of conflicting VIBs:

Brocade_bootbank_scsi-bfa_3.0.1.0-1OEM.500.0.0.472560

Brocade_bootbank_scsi-bfa_3.0.1.0-1OEM.500.0.0.472560

So... how can I find out if they are in use (and therefor needed in upgrade ISO) or if I can just delete them from the hosts?

If I need them - where can I find info about building custom VMware ISOs?

Thanks in advance, Lars.
